Larimar History
Larimar is a pectolite and is also known as:
- "Dolphin stone" for the charming and intelligent ocean creature
- "Caribbean gemstone" for its waves of ocean-blue color reminiscent of the waters near the Dominican Republic beach where it was found
- "Atlantis stone" for the belief by some that the Dominican Republic now stands where the legendary City of Atlantis fell
Larimar was reportedly discovered in 1916 by Father Miguel Domingo Fuertes Loren, but wasnt mined until decades later, when in 1974, Dominican Miguel Méndez and Peace Corps volunteer Norman Rilling noticed a piece of larimar on the Barahona province shoreline. Named for Miguels daughter, Larissa, and "mar," the Spanish word for "sea," larimar captures the exquisite beauty of the Caribbean Sea.
Metaphysical Properties
Edgar Cayce, the most documented psychic of the 20th century and a man known as the "sleeping prophet, once predicted that part of Atlantis would be discovered in the Caribbean. In addition, he indicated that a blue stone with extraordinary healing powers would be found there.
Larimar is commonly believed to be a calming stone, offering many incredible healing powers. It is considered by some to aid in communication and is associated with the crown, heart, third eye and throat chakras. Many alternative and holistic healers use larimar for a variety of physical, emotional and spiritual healing practices. Larimar promotes relaxation in the wearer.
Geological Properties
Larimar is a rare blue variety of pectolite. The serene blue color is the result of the substitution of copper for calcium in the stone. The color can present as various shades of blue, green, and purple from a very pale, nearly white hue, to very dark green, violet and indigo.
To date, the only known major deposits of larimar are found in the Dominican Republic, where it was most likely treasured by the areas first inhabitants, the Taino Indians. The only known major larimar mine is in this remote, mountainous location in the Dominican province of Barahona, where locals still mine the stone from narrow crevices using primitive hand tools. Other forms of pectolite can be found in the United States and Canada.
History Of Unakite
Unakite is a true rock: a composite material made up of multiple other stones. This gives unakite its familiar moss-on-brick appearance and makes it a popular lapidary material. The patterns, durability and affordability of unakite have also made it a useful stone for architecture--its most prominent use is trimming on the front steps of the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C.
Unakite was first discovered in the United States, in the Unakas mountains of western North Carolina/eastern Tennessee (hence its name). It can also be found on the beaches of Lake Superior, where it was originally dragged by glaciers, as well as washed down from the mountains into rivers in Virginia.
Metaphysical Properties
Unakite is said to be a stone of vision, opening the third eye and useful for scrying. It is also believed to be a stone of balance, grounding the self while bringing emotions and spirituality together.
Among crystal healing practitioners, unakite is used to support convalescence from illness. It is also believed to affect the reproductive system, healthy pregnancy and the growth of skin and hair.
Unakite is associated with two chakras: to the third eye chakra for its use in vision and scrying and to the heart chakra for its ability to balance emotions. It is not a current birthstone, but it has been historically assigned to March. It is also thought to offer patience and balance to Capricorn and Scorpio.
Geological Properties
This metamorphic rock is formed when granite is altered by hydrothermal activity. Unakite--also referred to as epidote/epidotized granite--blends green epidote, pink orthoclase feldspar and clear quartz and can contain trace amounts of other materials such as magnetite or zircon. As a rock (not a gemstone or element), unakite is found only in masses, not in crystal forms.
Unakite deposits may be found in not only the United States, but also Brazil, China, Sierra Leone and South Africa.

Common questions
- For pendants pictured without a bail (the piece that goes into the drill hole so you can slide a chain through), I will make a wire bail. I will need to be able to reach you to see what color bail you want the wire in.
Please keep dry. Some crystals will dissolve if they get wet. A little sweat against the skin or a little rain (if you are out and about) will be fine, but please do not shower or swim with the pieces.
